Dr. Anthony C. Romero

Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Anthony Romero is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with extensive experience in general orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. Utilizing minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques and aggressive rehabilitation protocols, he has extensive experience treating shoulder rotator cuff tears and instability, complex knee ligament and cartilage tears and a wide variety of ankle injuries. Dr. Romero is one of a limited number of orthopedic surgeons qualified to treat hip femoro-acetabular impingement and labral tears using such techniques. While his focus is on joint preserving arthroscopic surgery, he also performs joint replacement surgery and provides comprehensive fracture care.

Dr. Romero is uniquely qualified to treat athletes of all levels and skills. He has participated in the care of several professional and collegiate sports teams as well as professional dance troupes including the following: the San Francisco 49ers, New York Mets, Brooklyn Cyclones, Santa Clara University Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Martha Graham Dance Theater and San Jose Cleveland Ballet. He currently is the team physician for Laguna Blanca and Pacifica High Schools and serves as a sports medicine consultant to the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) and University of California, Santa Barbara’s Student Health Department.

Dr. Romero completed his undergraduate and postgraduate education at Stanford University graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology and a Master’s degree in Biomechanical Engineering. He received his medical degree and completed an internship in general surgery at University of California, San Francisco. Returning to Stanford, he completed his orthopedic residency, serving as chief resident during his final year. Following residency he completed an advanced fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at New York University and the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. Dr. Romero has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and has presented his findings to an international audience.
